Welcome to Friday Insights: a blog series aimed to raise awareness and resources about mental health, drug addiction and homelessness. This week's blog will be focused on mental health and the prevalence we see across our nation today.
Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (43.8 million, or 18.5%) experiences mental illness in a given year. (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
Stop for a minute to digest the previous sentence. Look to your left and right. There are countless humans around you in your every day that struggle with a form of mental illness. This may change your perspective to be more genuine and caring towards those around you.
Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings per year. (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
This statistic is brought up to show you the severity of what mental illnesses are. Our country currently lacks initiative on prioritizing healthy habits for its citizens: nutrition, exercise and sleep. Unhealthy eating has been one of the leading causes of death in recent years. Studies have been showing that your microbiome has direct affects to your mood, behavior and health.
There are many ways that mental illnesses can be treated: therapy, medication and lifestyle changes. Friday Insights and the Mental Insights Podcast will begin touching on these issues by providing resources with examples in the near future.
